What You'll Do
As a City Year AmeriCorps member, your service will focus on coaching and

Role and Responsibilities
Experience in all these tasks is not necessary. We provide 2-4 weeks of training at
the beginning of the year to support you. Plus, you will work with partner teachers
and school staff every step of the way.
Support academic coaching and interpersonal development for students:
· Work with identified students 1:1 and in small groups
· Develop literacy and/or math skills varying learning activities by student level,
answering student questions and encouraging assignment completion
· Create and implement a behavior management system for students
· Develop interpersonal skills throughout their day, using proven strategies of
learning, practicing, reflection and repetition
· Collaborate with teachers and team members to collect, record, analyze and
monitor individual student progress, participating in facilitated reviews of student
data collected and entered into City Year's student data system· Create an engaging, safe and healthy classroom space in collaboration with the teacher
Support Whole School initiatives to increase engagement with students and
families:
· Support and/or conduct extended day and virtual programming for students
before, during and after school including, but not limited to, academic enrichment
and intervention, homework support, recreation and student clubs, service
learning, and leadership development
· Create, support and/or co-lead events or programs that recognize and appreciate
student growth and/or achievement in math, literacy, attendance, and behavior

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district's low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. Vaughn operates five contiguous campuses under one charter.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Implementation:
Provide one on one and/or small group academic tutoring, in class room or after school, depending on school site
Maintain a professional relationship with teachers, administration, students, parents, and community members
Keep constant communication with teachers, school site staff, and GEAR UP staff
Supervise all participants to ensure a safe learning environment and organized program
Work collaboratively with teachers in the implementation of lesson plans
Assist with academic advising and college related events and presentations
Adhere to workplace safety guidelines
Attend required staff meetings, trainings and events on and offsite
Perform other duties as assigned
Some evenings and/or weekends may be required
Data Management and Monitoring:
Must maintain accurate daily attendance records
Log and track academic tutoring data
